Toby Alderweireld retires from the Belgian Red Devils

Toby Alderweireld (R. Antwerp FC) has decided to end his career as a Belgian Red Devil. In his 13 years as a Belgian Red Devil, Alderweireld grew into one of the absolute strongholds and figureheads of the Golden Generation, who took bronze at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Toby Alderweireld made his debut on 22 May 2009 under national coach Frank Vercauteren at the Kirin Cup in Japan with a 1-1 draw against Chile. Alderweireld grew into a familiar face and reliable presence in the defense of the national team.

“As a little boy I dreamed of playing for the national team. I am very grateful and proud that this dream has become a reality.
I can look back, 14 years later, on 127 international matches, 3 World Cups, 2 European Championships and countless beautiful memories. With pain in my heart I announce that I will retire from the Belgian Red Devils with immediate effect. I have given myself completely, physically and mentally, since my international debut in 2009.
It is now time to pay more attention to my fantastic family and to focus on my role at R. Antwerp FC. A very difficult decision, but the right one for me at the moment. I want to thank all my teammates and the staff of the Belgian Red Devils for the unforgettable moments we shared together. Without them none of this would have been possible.
Finally, I would like to address the Belgian fans: wherever we went, you were there. Thanks for your support. I will never forget you."

Toby Alderweireld

The RBFA wishes to thank Toby for his everlasting commitment to the national team.

“We will miss Toby enormously. He still had his place in the national team. Toby is an example for young players and a true professional. We would have loved to benefit from his qualities and experience a little longer, but after his many years of service, we understand his decision to spend more time with his family. We wish him the best in his further career and hope that, at some time after his playing career, he will take on a role within the RBFA with his experience!”
Peter Bossaert, CEO RBFA
