Red Devils and Red Flames fans show support for care providers with national virtual wave

Proceeds solidarity action ‘The 1895 Wave for Support’ benefit Red Cross

1895 Official Belgian Fan Club, the official fan club of all our national football teams, together with the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) and at the initiative of some of its supporters, is launching a virtual wave. With this large, online solidarity action, named “The 1895 Wave for Support,” Belgian football fans can show their support for all care providers in the fight against the coronavirus. Proceeds of the solidarity action will go entirely to the Belgian Red Cross. The organisation will use the fonds to purchase masks, gloves and disinfectant spray for its volunteers.

In one wave behind our care providers with Red Devils, Red Flames and other famous Belgians

The RBFA and Fan Club 1895 call on all Belgians to upload a short video, between 5 May and 13 June, on waveforsupport.be in which he/she performs the iconic wave motion. Everyone will then immediately see themselves in the virtual wave, among their football idols and famous Belgians performing the wave. The action ends symbolically on 13 June, the day the Red Devils were to start the EURO. The RBFA will then have the longest virtual Mexican wave, in honour of all care providers in our country.

Ertan Elibol, 1895 staff member: “For the past month and a half, every night at 20:00 at our front door, we have been applauding all nurses, doctors and volunteers to thank them for their heroic efforts in the fight against the coronavirus. The fantastic fans of our national football teams also wish to contribute and honor all these people who work behind the scenes. There is no better way to do this than by showing a giant wave like we do when we support our football heroes.”

25 Euro for a can of disinfectant spray, 40 Euro for 14 FFP2 masks

The virtual wave is more than just a symbolic gesture. Fans can also donate to the Red Cross and its staff. These donations, in an amount of your choice or for 20, 40 or 75 Euro, will help the Red Cross continue to support those in need, in all of Belgium, in their battle against the coronavirus.

Nancy Ferroni, Red Cross : “Our volunteers have been engaged in the fight against COVID-19 for weeks. The national wave will give them and our fellow care givers the mental boost they need to keep going. The financial support of the action is also needed to ensure we reach as many vulnerable people in need as we can. With a 25 Euro donation, fans can help us buy disinfectant spray to decontaminate an ambulance. We can buy 14 FFP2 masks for our care givers with 40 Euro, and 75 Euro allows us to purchase enough gloves for a full week of transport for possibly infected patients.”

Do the 1895 Wave for Support with Janice Cayman, Jan Vertonghen and Siebe Schrijvers

Janice Cayman, Tine De Caigny, Dries Mertens, Thomas Meunier, and Jan Vertonghen are just a few of the Red Flames and Red Devils who have already submitted their videos. Belgian Red Lion Loick Luypaert and our EURO U21 captain Siebe Schrijvers have also shared their wave. The same goes for RBFA CEO Peter Bossaert and former Red Devils Marc Degryse and Geert De Vlieger. You will see more of our national players appear in the coming days and our coaches have also prepared their wave. All we need is you!
