From Friday 22 September 2023, the Belgian Red Flames will participate in the very first edition of the Nations League. During the opening game, they meet the Orange Lionesses. Later they also come up against Scotland and reigning European champions England. The flames hope to play three times in a sold-out stadium and achieve top performances with the support of the fans. The RBFA and fan club 1895 leave nothing to chance and want to set the stadium on fire.
“After a successful European Championship in 2022, with a historic quarter-final, we look forward to once again be able to measure ourselves against top European countries. The Netherlands, England and Scotland are tough opponents, so we count on the support of the fans. Because we know that they can give us that extra push at important moments.”
– Ives Serneels, national coach Belgian Red Flames
Nations League first edition
UEFA is organising a Nations League for women for the first time. The tournament will start in September and the final will be played in February 2024. The results not only determine which countries are allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, but also influence the draw for the qualifiers for the European championship in 2025. A good Nations League campaign can give the Red Flames a boost to qualify for the European championship. Read the different scenarios here.
Belgium is one of the best sixteen countries in Europe and was therefore part of the A-league in the draw for the Nations League. As a result, the Belgians are meeting top teams in the group stage: the Netherlands, England, and Scotland.
RBFA and fan club 1895 are behind Belgian Red Flames
The flames hope that the fans will come to Leuven in big numbers and let Den Dreef explode. They receive full support from the RBFA and fan club 1895.
Last summer, the RBFA warmed up Belgian fans for the European Championship with the #FLAMETIME campaign. The flames did not disappoint, with a historic quarter final. From September, the fire will be rekindled, with DJ sets, fringe animation, flags, ... in and around the stadium. Before the game against the Netherlands, a tifo will also be rolled out for the first time for the Red Flames. The RBFA and fan club 1895 leave nothing to chance to give the flames that extra push.
“The professionalisation of women's football continues, with the Nations League as a new milestone. And we want to jump on that wave with the RBFA. We want to expand the fan base that we have built up during the European championships in 2022 and make the atmosphere around our national women's team even more vibrant.”
– Katrien Jans, women 's football manager RBFA
