Ex-Red Devil Thomas Vermaelen joins Red Devils' technical staff
Thomas Vermaelen has announced his retirement as a footballer and will now be one of Roberto Martínez's assistants in the Red Devils' staff. The national manager saw Shaun Maloney leave for Scottish side Hibernian at the end of last year and Thomas Vermaelen will now help fill that gap.
Roberto Martínez is delighted with the arrival of Vermaelen to the Red Devils:
“His experience during his exceptional career for club and the Red Devils will be a huge asset for our Technical Staff. His recent role and performances in the national team during the Euros, will make an easy introduction to the group into the March camp. His knowledge of the group and enthusiasm in coaching shown during the Red Devils coaching course taking in thge Belgium FA, will make it a natural transition from Red Devil player to a Red Devil Coach. We are delighted.”
Thomas Vermaelen:
“I am looking forward to this challenge immensely and am very honoured, happy and above all grateful to help prepare for the World Cup in Qatar as one of Roberto Martínez's assistants.”
The coaching course that Roberto Martínez started for the Red Devils as technical director of the RBFA, and which ends in June, is now bearing its first fruit with Thomas Vermaelen.
