Assistant referee Ella De Vries selected for 2023 World Cup

FIFA has appointed our compatriot as A-VAR for the FIFA Women's World Cup next summer in Australia and New Zealand.

Good news for assistant referee Ella De Vries. Following her selection for WEURO 2022 in England and the Women's U20 World Cup in Costa Rica, De Vries will also be present at the 2023 Women's World Cup. FIFA selected our compatriot for the next World Cup as A-VAR. "Of course, I am very happy and excited to be selected for the upcoming World Cup," De Vries responded.

Things have been moving fast for Ella De Vries over the past two seasons. She made her debut in the 2021-2022 season as assistant VAR in the Super Cup match between Club Brugge and Racing Genk. Since then, she has been a regular video referee in Belgian professional men's football. At the beginning of December, she was awarded another FIFA badge as Video Match Official, allowing her to take her place as VAR in both international men's and women's football. She has had a FIFA badge as an assistant referee since 2008.

The 2023 World Cup is therefore the next step in De Vries' career. At the World Cup in Canada (2015), she was working as an assistant referee on the pitch, now she gets to take her place in the VAR.

"I hope to represent Belgium as well as possible at this tournament and deliver a fine performance."
Ella De Vries
